Cleary
Milwaukee- Michael J. Cleary, 69, president of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance company, and member of the University of Wisconsin board of regents, died today following a stroke. Cleary, former member of the state legislature and one time commissioner of insurance, was named to the board of regents in 1939 by Gov. Julius P. Heil and had been active on the board’s finance committee since that time.
He was born in Blanchardville, Wis., Sept 23, 1877. He attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated from the law school in 1901. While serving as insurance commissioner he participated in the preparation of the state’s insurance laws and during the governorship of Emmanuel Phillip served as executive counsel. He was apponted to the regents board following the passage of the Roethe bill which reorganized the board from 14 to nine members.
Cleary was elected vice president of Northwestern Mutual in April, 1919, three months before the expiration of his term as insurance commissioner. He was elected president of the company Oct. 19, 1932. Cleary served as chairman of the Lafayette county board for six years prior to his election as assemblyman in 1907.
