Helena Shot Tower
Built in 1831–1832, the Helena Shot Tower was used to manufacture lead shot for muskets and rifles until 1861
Perched dramatically on a limestone bluff overlooking the Wisconsin River, the Helena Shot Tower stands as a remarkable monument to 19th-century industrial ingenuity and the American frontier spirit. Built in 1831 near the booming lead-mining boomtown of Helena—now a ghost town within Tower Hill State Park—the tower was constructed to efficiently manufacture lead shot for hunters and the military. Rather than casting pellets in molds, the builders utilized gravity by digging a 120-foot vertical shaft straight down through the solid sandstone cliff, topped by a small brick tower house. Molten lead, mixed with a touch of arsenic to help it form spheres, was poured through a copper sieve at the top. As the liquid droplets plunged through the dark air shaft, surface tension naturally molded them into perfect spheres before they plunged into a cool basin of water at the bottom. The resulting shot was then hauled out via a horizontal adit (tunnel) driven into the base of the cliff along the river. Though the original boom was short-lived—halted by a devastating fire, economic depressions, and the depletion of easily accessible local lead—the surviving structure remains a fascinating, tangible link to Wisconsin’s early pioneer history, offering visitors a haunting glimpse into the rugged mechanics of the past.
